Bariloche Backcountry at Cerro Catedral and Beyond

While Bariloche + Cerro Catedral do not have as much as a reputation for the steepness and backcountry of Las Lenas, the backcountry, touring and hut touring is very good here. As there are less foreigners with fat skis and boards the powder seems to last longer here. However it definitely does warm up here after a storm quicker than the Northern Andes resorts so get out there.

Laguna,Palmeras, Catedral Area (1 Day)

Ski the best spots on the hill without getting stuck below the main lifts and having to climb out of creeks. We organize your day with an English speaking local guide that is also a certified ski or snowboard instructor who will take you to the best stashes and steeps on the hill, and then venture out to Laguna, Catedral and Palmeras areas depending on weather, snow quality and avalanche conditions.

Touring bindings, touring skis, skins, yupi shoes and splitboards are NOT required. As well if you want someone to just ski around with in the easier parts of the resort that is fine as well.

Top of Laguna Area - Huere Darquier

Now we are pleased to offer more hiking intense single day and 2-3 days overnight backcountry touring trips.  Skis with touring bindings (Fritchie Freeride, Naxo), skins and for snowboarders split boards and skins or yupi shoes ARE required. If you do have this equipment please enquire about renting them for your trip. As well you are required to have an avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe and proper backpack that you can securely strap your skis or snowboard too and can carry the avalanche equipment mentioned here. You do not have to be an expert skier/snowboarder or hiker/tourer/mountaineer, but you do require to be physically fit enough to handle walking uphill 3-4 hours a day. Please scroll down this page for various options, including the classic trip to Refugio Frey.

Once we reach the mountain lodge, we'll relax for a short while, enjoy a snack and then begin with the skis our way up. We will climb through mountain terrain for about 2 hours until we reach the summit, from where you are able to see all the mountains of the region: Cerro Tronador (3.554 m), Volcán Lanin (3.776 m), Tristeza branch and the whole Nahuel Huapi lake. Descend in alpine style to the lodge, take a short break and then we start our way back to return to your hotel.

Refugio Frey (2 - 3 Days)

This mountain lodge is located in the middle of a valley surrounded by granite spires whitened by the snow and with usually clean deep blue sky. We could say that is one of the best places to ski with great ridges and good snow for touring ski. Refugio Frey is located behind the top of Cerro Catedral Ski resort and is best accessed from taking the chairs up Cerro Catedral and then making your way to the Refugio and surrounding area.

3 Day Trip

Day one: We start our hike at the foot of cerro Catedral from Villa Catedral on the usual trail to Refugio Frey. After 5 hours walk we get to Frey. (including stopovers for lunch and snacks). At the lodge we have dinner (some good pasta, fondue, etc.). There is also an option that we recommend instead of hiking the usual trail we take the ski lift to the top of cerro Catedral and we tour over the Van Titter valley to the joint of Van Titter and Toncek stream, after lunch we go up to the refugio Frey ( approx.. 5 Hs)

Day two: After breakfast we get our skis ready and we start our way through the frozen Toncek lagoon to the mountain edge where we can ski down hill on the coluoir (only for experts). If the skier is not very experienced we can ski downhill the Col Parotida or to the Campanile valley, or another skiing area for intermediate skier. at midday we go back to the Refugio for lunch, in the afternoon you can choose from several places to ski or just stay at the refugio and rest. In the evening dinner and relax.

Day three: After breakfast we start our way back on the trail to Villa Catedral with stopovers for lunch and snacks.(approx. 4 Hs).
