Southern Argentina

Argentina has ski resorts that suite everyone's tastes and and budgets especially in the Southern Region of Patagonia and further south in Ushuaia. What makes Southern Argentina different then the North of Argentina and Chilean resorts is that there are actual towns that are 10-15 minutes from the ski resort depending on where in town you are staying. This gives you the chance to immerse yourself more into Argentine culture and not as isolated being at a resort that only has a few hotels and apartments and not much else as well as offering more of a variety of different type of accommodations, bars and restaurants. These ski resorts also have some options of accommodation right at the ski resort base if you prefer to stay ski in ski out.

Bariloche boasts the biggest town of all the ski resorts in Patagonia as well as having the most lifts and biggest ski resort at Cerro Catedral and normally gets the most reliable snow of all the Patagonia resorts. Experience the feeling of skiing at the end of the world in Ushuaia at Cerro Castor ski resort and visiting nearby Tierra Del Fuego national park.  While Ushuaia is further away (3 hour flight from Buenos Aires) we think it is worth it for this unique experience and the ski resort has the best lifts, grooming, and is the best organized ski resort in our opinion in South America.  San Martin de los Andes and Chapelco ski resort offer the combination of an old European small town combined with lakes and spectacular views in Patagonia and is a bit smaller and the hill is a bit more flat then Cerro Catedral.

The ski resorts of Cerro Bayo, La Hoya are smaller resorts but great values and less crowded and with a real local feel.  We recommend going to these resorts for generally just 2-3 days and as an add on to a trip to Bariloche as the town of Villa de Angostura and ski resort Cerro Bayo are 1 hour from Bariloche and the town of Esquel and ski resort La Hoya 4 hours south of Bariloche.  Caviahue is a beautiful smaller resort near the city of Neuquen north of San Martin de Los Andes.  All the accommodation is right at Caviahue and is a very small town there. The ski hill is more flat like Chapelco but is sourrounded by amazing Araucaracia trees, a lake, and has a volcano that you can take a snowcat up to or ski tour to get to, for the more adventurous rider you can also traverse or hike to the rustic hot springs on the side of the resort and we find 2-3 days for an advanced skier is ok at Caviahue. Cerro Bayo, La Hoya, and Caviahue are much more economical resorts and for complete beginners or low intermediates we find 5-7 days is an option. Tourism has increased dramatically the past couple of years with more and more foreigners discovering Argentina's vast array of resources and attractions such as world class skiing/snowboarding, fly fishing, hiking, vineyards, food (amazing beef), lakes, mountains, beaches, culture, tango and music.

This is one Latin American country where Europeans and North Americans can feel at ease and travel relatively inconspicuously and safely without being hassled.
